ACTIVITIES -- PROGRAMS -- EVENTS
SPORTS -- The school district does not sponsor any elementary sports programs, but it allows community based programs to use school facilities. Elementary sports programs are offered through the Grand Rapids Park & Recreation Dept., the YMCA and various individual sports associations. Registration information is disseminated through the weekly parent folders. All participants are under the direct supervision of their coaches. Parents must transport.
ITASCA ORCHESTRAL & STRINGS SOCIETY - Staff from the IOSS conduct stringed instrument lessons at Southwest during the school day and after school at the middle school. This fee based program is open to all elementary students.
GIRL SCOUT and BOY SCOUT troops are organized by parent volunteer leaders. Some troops meet at school and some meet off campus. Organizational recruitment meetings are held each fall.
AFTER SCHOOL LEARNING ACADEMY – A program of remedial and tutorial reading and math support provided through Community Education and subject to teacher recommendation and parent approval. Summer Learning Academy is an additional support program.
EDUCARE – Fee based afterschool daycare program provided on site by the YMCA. Contact the YMCA for details at 327-2418.
FUNDRAISER COLLECTABLES – Southwest collects various fundraiser tokens, including General Mills “Box Tops for Education” and Campbells’ Soup Labels and associated product labels. Empty printer ink cartridges are recycled as a school fundraiser. These fundraisers provide a significant amount of money which is used to support classroom needs. Your support is greatly appreciated!!!
RECYCLING PROGRAMS – Southwest encourages recycling materials to benefit the community and promote a sustainable environment. The school internally recycles alluminum, cardboard, and office paper to reduce landfill waste. We support Project Read's "Red Bookshelf" Program by collecting used childrens’ books for distribution throughout the community to promote literacy. Books can be dropped off in the red bin by the office for. Aluminum poptops are collected for the Ronald McDonald House project. Used cellphones are collected for local charities to refurbish as emergency phones for domestic abuse victims. Donations may be dropped off in the office. Empty printer ink cartridges are also recycled as a school fundraiser. Southwest encourages everyone to reuse and recycle!!!
